About

My name is Madeline Ashby and I like to write things.

These things can be science fiction stories, comments on anime, recipes, promotions for my friends’ work, rants, memories. My work has been published in peer reviewed journals and in printed anthologies. It’s been released for free, and released for money. I’ve written a master’s thesis, and I’m finishing up a novel. Both are about killer robots.

I initially intended this place to be a spot where I could release my unpublished stories for free. I could expose them on a hillside, like little Oedipus, so that the vultures of the internet could pick them apart. But that didn’t happen, because my stories ended up with publishers great and small. Now I have an agent, a deadline, and clearer goals. I will move this site to a different domain, someday, when I have more time to organize things the way I want. For now, though, this is my spot.

Some more about me:

I’m a student of the Strategic Foresight and Innovation program at the Ontario College of Art and Design. My other Master’s is from York University. I’m also a member of the Cecil Street Irregulars, one of Toronto’s oldest genre workshops. I joined in 2006 shortly after moving to Canada, and my life hasn’t been the same since. I’m married (to a Canadian). I have a cat. I procrastinate by reading food blogs and watching AMV’s. I am an erstwhile contributor to WorldChanging Canada and Frames Per Second Magazine. I am a blood donor, and a registered organ and bone marrow donor. I speak a smattering of Spanish and Japanese. You can sometimes catch me as a panelist at conventions. Look a little lower down than you would normally; I’m very short.
